New BMW 8 Series On The Way

Although BMW have stated this is just a concept at this time, a rumored 8-series has been on the cards for a number of years, and this is likely to be pretty close to the final production model which is no doubt coming soon. Full BMW words with the announcement are below.

The BMW Group is using this year’s Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este to unveil the BMW Concept 8 Series, the essence of a modern-day BMW coupe wrapped up in an enthralling design study. The study car will serve as a taster of a forthcoming BMW model – the new BMW 8 Series Coupe, slated for launch in 2018 and part of the biggest model offensive in the company’s history. The NUMBER ONE > NEXT strategy sees the BMW Group aiming to significantly increase sales and revenues in the luxury class, and the BMW 8 Series Coupe plays an important role here. “The number 8 has always represented the pinnacle of sports performance and exclusivity at BMW,” explains Chairman of the Board of Management of BMW AG Harald Krüger. “The forthcoming BMW 8 Series Coupe will demonstrate that razor-sharp dynamics and modern luxury can go hand-in-hand. This will be the next model in the expansion of our luxury-car offering and will raise the benchmark for coupes in the segment. In the process, we will strengthen our claim to leadership in the luxury class.”

McLaren 570GT by MSO

Supposedly this is a “concept” but expect to see most, if not all, of the new features available on your 570 options list sometime soon. Although it has nothing to do with performance, I’m kind of excited to see the Electro-Chromic roof in action – the future is definitely here boys and girls.

McLaren 570 GT MSO

McLaren Automotive has released details of the new McLaren 570GT by MSO Concept ahead of its debut on the famed 18th fairway of Pebble Beach golf course at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance, the world’s highest-profile competitive display of collector’s cars.  The McLaren 570GT by MSO Concept will be displayed on the concept lawn where previously McLaren has displayed many of its concept and future models, not least the McLaren P1TM.

The McLaren 570GT by MSO Concept further accentuates the McLaren interpretation of a GT car.  Previewing a collection of enhancements created by McLaren’s bespoke division MSO which was itself launched at Pebble Beach in 2012, the car is the first example of the recently-introduced 570GT to receive the attention of McLaren’s finest team of craftsmen and designers.  They have added styling, feature and material enhancements such as an Electro-Chromic Roof that are all destined to become available through the MSO Defined portfolio.

Firstly, the McLaren 570GT by MSO Concept delivers an improved aural experience both for the driver and onlookers thanks to its new MSO Exhaust system. Manufactured from titanium and consequently 30% lighter than the standard stainless steel system, the MSO Exhaust takes learnings from the McLaren 675LT project, delivering a progressively richer and more characterful tone more immediately as the revs rise than the standard exhaust.  The MSO Exhaust’s heat shields are also finished in a golden titanium nitride tint, visible through the rear air ducts, which naturally change colour to a blue/purple as the system heats and cools through its cycle.

Aston Martin Vanquish Zagato

Aston Martin Vanquish Zagato Concept_02

Do you ever get the feeling that the day is going your way? I managed to see an Aston Martin Grande Rapide this morning on the school run, and then the very same company decided to announce one of their Zagato specials. This makes up for yesterday when a late call from the garage about the lack of their ability to source some new pads and rotors for the M3 meant a planned day at the track was replaced with a not quite so exciting day in front of the laptop (but technically on vacation so still smiling). Anyway, enough about me, all the details on the new Aston are below, along with some pretty pretty pictures.

Aston Martin and Italian design-house Zagato are proud to announce the Vanquish Zagato Concept, the latest creation from their long-standing partnership. The Vanquish Zagato Concept will make its global debut at the prestigious Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este, held at Lake Como in Italy from 21 – 22 May 2016

BMW 3.0 CSL HOMMAGE R

BMW 3.0 CLS Hommage

The BMW Group has come up with something very special this year with the world premiere of the BMW 3.0 CSL Hommage R – a car that celebrates both the 40th anniversary of BMW in North America and the heady racing success of the BMW 3.0 CSL in 1975.

I was going to write a load of random stuff about how this car was made, and the various design items used in development and construction, but sod that – just enjoy the pics 😉

BMW M4 GTS

BMW M4 GTS 2016

Still a concept at this stage, but OMFG this thing looks nice. Following on from the previous special edition track focused versions (GTS, E46 M3 CSL, E30 M3 EVO etc), BMW has released a “concept” for the Monterey Car Week and it’s pretty spectacular. And in the best news since NBC’s renewal of their Premier League contract, IT WILL BE AVAILABLE TO BUY IN THE US!!!!!!!!!!!

“While the BMW M4 Coupe embodies the ideal combination of motor sport genes and unrestricted everyday usability, the BMW Concept M4 GTS previews an emotionally powerful and exclusive special model conceived with an eye for trailblazing technology and a keen focus on the race track,” explains Frank van Meel, Chairman of the Board of Management of BMW M GmbH. “Despite its outstanding track ability, it is still fully road-legal. This is racing technology for the road in the truest sense.”

M4 GTS rear

The BMW Concept M4 GTS builds on the BMW M4 Coupe’s dynamic and emotional use of forms. Yet its character as a high-performance special model, in which every detail has been developed to fulfil its purpose as a successful track machine, also comes immediately to the fore. The manually adjustable front splitter and rear wing – both in exposed carbon – ensure perfect aerodynamic balance on the race tracks and on the road. Another example of the engineers’ rigorous adherence to lightweight design is the CFRP (carbon-fiber-reinforced plastic) hood which lowers the car’s weight and center of gravity. A wide front air intake optimizes airflow and minimizes front axle lift.

M4 GTS Splitter

The dynamic and exclusive presence of the BMW Concept M4 GTS is accentuated by the exterior paint shade Frozen Dark Grey metallic, with the Acid Orange accent on the front splitter creating an effective contrast. The lightweight, forged and polished light-alloy wheels in 666 M styling also feature an Acid Orange accent. The 9.5 J x 19 (front) and 10.5 J x 20 (rear) wheels are fitted with Michelin Sport Cup 2 tires (265/35 R19 at the front, 285/30 R20 at the rear). The mixed-size tires provide the ideal conduit for the stand-out dynamic attributes of the BMW Concept M4 GTS.

The engine powering the BMW Concept M4 GTS is equipped with the same innovative water injection system that has endowed the BMW M4 MotoGP Safety Car with a noticeable increase in output and torque.

Audi TT Clubsport

2015-audi-TT-clubsport-turbo-concept-1

Showcasing some of Audi’s latest technology (which they’re deeming close to production ready), they this week unveiled the Audi TT Clubsport. Sporting a wide body stance, upgraded engine and a fair bit of lightening, it looks little on the spectacular side.

2015-audi-tt-clubsport-turbo-concept-2

The Audi TT clubsport turbo has a power-boosted 2.5 TFSI engine with 600 hp of power and 479 lb-ft of torque, the latter from 3,000 to 7,000 rpm, combined with an electric compressor to fill in the low/laggy turbo part of the rev-band. This power is transferred via a manual six-speed transmission.

337627_news-2015-audi-tt-clubsport-turbo-concept-5

The compact sports car takes a full stance on the road with track widths of 1,736 mm (68.3 in) in front and 1,729 mm (68.1 in) at the rear. The car is 4.33 meters (14.2 ft) long and 1.97 meters (6.5 ft) wide, including the side mirrors – 14 cm (5.5 in) wider than the technical platform upon which it was based. Its angular fenders contribute a separate additive shape to the car body. They take the characteristic design motif of the Audi TT* to an extreme and accentuate the distribution of engine power to all four wheels – the quattro drive. The fenders of the show car – painted in the exterior color Ferro Titanium – are open at the front and rear. Air from the car’s slipstream flows through them to cool the brakes. The Singleframe grille and large air inlets – whose vertical fins form a continuation to the light signature of the Matrix LED headlights – are also optimized for maximum air throughput.

The manually adjustable rear wing is an advanced development of the Audi Sport TT Cup with which the brand very recently launched a dedicated race series. It is now 20 cm (7.9 in) wider, and the side flaps, which feature the four rings, were given a new geometry. The wing consists of carbon-fiber reinforced polymer (CFRF) as do all other add-on parts: the air inlets and the large splitter at the front, the side panels and side sill trims as well as the voluminous diffuser at the rear whose lateral segments reference the motif of the air inlets.

Mini Superlegga

mini superlegga

Finally Mini has come out with a variant that actually looks good (or maybe I’m just on my own thinking the current coupe and countryman and whatever else random they spawned are all fugly).

Scheduled for release (hopefully) in 2018 as a replacement for the roadster) this to me almost looks like a mini Jag of old (and that’s definitely a good thing). If you can imagine one of these things with the Cooper S engine in there, it could be the perfect baby convertible for those summer days.

Infiniti Sports Coupe Teaser

Infiniti Q60 Concept

Set to be fully released at the Detroit Auto Show next month, Infiniti released a brief teaser of the upcoming Q60 design. It looks promising but I’ll reserve final comment until we get a better look and a few more details. Stay tuned.

Volkswagen XL Sport

VW XL SportWhat happens if you pair a futuristic (and light) body with a Ducati Superleggera V-Twin engine? I guess the guys at VW were interested in finding out.

276850_DB2014AU01207The XL Sport achieves the best ratio between weight (1962 pounds), power (147 kW/197 hp) and aerodynamics (CdA of 0.44 square meters) of any car. It’s a combination that allows it to reach an impressive top speed of 168 mph on just 197 hp.

276863_DB2014AU01212There are a number of individual features that contribute to the XL Sport’s arrow-like performance, in addition to the uncompromising styling. These include special vanes that direct the air at the front into specific channels, wheelarch vents, an optimized underbody, lift-reducing air ducts in the hood, an extendable rear spoiler (powered by the same unit as in the Lamborghini Aventador), and adaptive air vents incorporated in the rear hatch.

276887_DB2014AU01226The significantly redesigned chassis, high-revving engine, and aerodynamic performance firmly plant the XL Sport in the racing realm. The chassis incorporates high-strength steel subframes which house upper and lower control arms at the front with pullrod actuation for the dampers, while the control arms at the back have pushrods—similar to the layout for a racing car. The forged magnesium-alloy wheels, which save 53 pounds compared to aluminum-alloy rims, are fitted with 205/40 R18 front and 265/35 R18 rear high-performance tires. The XL Sport has a powerful ceramic brake disc setup.

Kia Concept (and it’s actually good!)

Kia Stinger GT4 ConceptKia surprised the automotive world (well, me and at least one other person) with their release of the GT4 Stinger concept.

Kia GT4 Stinger Concept rearDesigned as a rear-drive competitor to the Subaru BRZ, Kia loaded it with a 315bhp turbo 2.0 liter engine to make sure people took notice. No word on if/when it will hit the market, but I think the brand could win over a whole new set of followers with something like this at it’s usual low price point.
