2018 BMW M5 – 600 BHP!

I could use so many excuses for not posting over the last few months, but lets just move onto the just announced 2018 M5, with it’s astounding 0-60 time of 3.2 seconds. Yip, you read that right – 3.2 seconds for a 0-60 in a family saloon. Wow.

I’ll post the whole press release after the jump so you can catch it, but here’s the highlights

  • The 6th generation BMW M5 is the quickest most technologically advanced M-vehicle to date: 0–60 mph in a lightning-quick 3.2 seconds; 0–124 mph in just 11.1 seconds. Top speed: 189 mph with optional M Driver’s Package.
  • The latest generation M TwinPower Turbo technology 4.4-liter V8 engine develops 600 hp and peak torque of 553 lb-ft.
  • Debut of the first ever BMW M xDrive system with 2WD capability.
  • M compound brakes fitted as standard. Available M carbon ceramic brakes provide a 50 lb. unsprung weight reduction.
  • Like all M models, the chassis was honed on the world’s most challenging race circuit, the Nürburgring Nordschleife.
  • Reduced weight by intelligent use of materials such as a carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP) roof and a weight-optimized exhaust system.
  • Exceptional performance both in day-to-day driving and on the racetrack.
  • BMW M5 First Edition with exclusive specification available in limited 50 unit run in the US.

New M3 Spy Shots Appear

Rumored to be lower in weight (finally!) and still using a straight six, although this time with a couple of turbo’s bolted on, Car and Driver has some spy shots of the new M3. I’m sure the news will continue to leak until all the official details are out – I’m hoping it reverses the trend of recent M incarnations and gets things back to real driver focused cars, rather than a glorified marketing exercise with lots of power and little feel (I’m looking at you M5). We’ll see.

Drive – M5 vs GT-R

In case you haven’t had a chance to check it out yet, Drive is a new channel on YouTube  featuring lots of cool car stuff. Highly recommend you check it out, not least for the appearance of Chris Harris, one of my favorite car enthusiasts. Here’s one his videos on the new M5 against the GT-R.

M5 Drag Race

If you wondered just how fast the new M5 was compared to it’s rivals (in a straight line), Evo has the answer for you

Evo First M5 Review

Evo is the best car magazine on the planet (if there’s a better one, you better tell me, coz I’ve been a believer with my own cash for an international subscription for a very long time now). And they’ve done a quick review of the M5 before the full version gets released in the magazine very soon. As you’d expect, it’s super fast, super responsive, but they want to test it on English roads with a couple of competitors (XFR and new E63 AMG) before they deliver the final all encompassing verdict. Read the initial take for yourself right here.
