Porsche 911 R Outside

Trying to get a little caught up on my posts after a pretty slack start to the year, so here’s my favorite announcement of the year – a proper 911 with a proper gearbox. The only bad news is that (based on some reports from sources who’ve tried) you’re not allowed on the waitlist for one of these unless you’re already in possession of a nice little 918 Spyder, meaning you are either a) very lucky, or b) have little to no chance of buying this beauty. Celebrating its world debut at the 2016 Geneva International Motor Show, the new 2016 Porsche 911 R follows the tradition set by the first road-homologated race car bearing the name in 1967. Produced as part of a limited production series, the original 911 R (R for Racing) was entered in rallies, in the Targa Florio and in world record runs. Like its legendary predecessor, the new 911 R features a systematic lightweight construction, a high level of performance and an unfiltered driving experience. The 911 R is limited to 991 units worldwide, and represents the lightest available version of the 911 with a curb weight of just 3021 pounds. Powered by a 500 hp four-liter naturally aspirated flat-six engine which is mated to a six-speed manual transmission, the 911 R underscores Porsche’s commitment to building emotional and engaging high-performance sports cars with a maximum amount of driving pleasure. Developed by Porsche’s motorsport department, the 911 R is the third model to use Porsche’s latest generation of high-performance naturally aspirated flat-six engines alongside the track-bred 911 GT3 and 911 GT3 RS models.

Powering the 911 R is the four-liter flat-six familiar from the 911 GT3 RS. The race-bred powertrain delivers 500 hp at 8,250 rpm and generates 338 lb.-ft. of torque at 6,250 rpm. The 911 R can accelerate from 0 to 60 miles per hour in 3.7 seconds and reach a top track speed of 200 miles per hour. True to its purist character, the lightweight model is available exclusively with a six-speed manual transmission featuring short, performance oriented gear ratios. The quick and crisp shifting further underscores the high level of driving engagement.

Ford Focus RS – Drift Mode Video

Finally getting a few more details about the much anticipated (at least by me) Ford Focus RS, including the press release today that the first one has rolled off the assembly line and they’re targeted for an early spring launch in the US. That’s all well and good, but what we all really want to see is Drift Mode in action, and those kind folks at Ford have obliged.

In cars  you won’t see in road going form in the US, please add the tartan interiored (???) Lotus Exige Sport 350 – a lot like the last S version, but now with less (weight, time to 60mph, that sort of thing). Full details below, including some pics of that fantastic interior decoration.

  • 51 kg lighter than previous Exige S
  • 345 hp and in excess of 300 hp/tonne
  • 0-60 mph in 3.7 Seconds and top speed of 170 mph

Jenson to join Race of Champions

McLaren’s Jenson Button has become the latest Formula 1 driver to sign up to Race of Champions in London later this month.

The 35-year-old 2009 world champion joins four-time world champion Sebastian Vettel and Daniel Ricciardo at the event which will be staged at London’s Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park on 20-21 November.

Button will compete in the main event and partner endurance sportscar racer Alex Buncombe to represent Great Britain in the Nations Cup.

“I can’t wait to be back at the Race of Champions again – and especially to be racing at home at London’s former Olympic Stadium,” said Button.

If your Nissan GT-R wasn’t quite fast enough for you, Nissan gave you the Nismo, a not very cheap extension of performance direct from the internal skunkworks team. And then of course, that begged the question (or maybe not), what should I do if I want even more speed? Well, Nissan kindly provided the answer for that – the N-Attack Pack, a bundle of dedicated option parts designed to make you go even faster.

The NISMO N Attack Package was developed to achieve optimal speed and includes components such as aerodynamics necessary for superior down-force, suspension that can handle such a punishing road surface full of undulations and turbulent fluctuations, and full bucket seats essential to maintain the optimal driving position even under powerful g-force.

In Japan, these parts are combined and assembled at the NISMO Omori Factory, whose mechanics participated in the time attack project, while, in the U.S., Steve Millen Sportsparts Inc. (STILLEN) was chosen to conduct sales as the official installer and certified sales agency.

The “NISMO N Attack Package” consists of the dedicated parts that were especially developed through the time attack project at Nürburgring in Germany, where the Nissan GT-R NISMO recorded a time of 7 minutes 8.679 seconds, the fastest recorded time for a volume production vehicle.

BMW M2 – It’s official

After months of speculation and lots of guess work, the official details of the M2 is now here. Major upgrades from the M235i abound – check out the details in the full press release below, but here’s a couple of the main ones

  • Power at 365bhp and torque at 343 lb-ft (and overboost up to 369 when needed)
  • Manual gearbox (hurrah!) along with a twin clutch transmission if that’s your deal
  • 0-60 in 4.2 with a top speed limited to 155mph
  • Wider track at both the front and rear
  • Fully variable Active M Diff

So, all in all, everything that everyone was hoping for (at least I think – really, really hoping this drives well). This could be the new M3 in spirit if not in name….

2016 Ford Focus RS – US Pricing and More

Finally Ford came through with pricing, and although not quite as competitive as it went in the UK (where the base price came in at 2000 UK pounds below the Golf R), it’s still good – $36,605. It also release official performance figures and a bunch of other stuff, so here goes.

Ford Motor Company’s all-new Focus RS will sprint from 0-62 mph in 4.7 seconds – making the high-performance hatchback the fastest-accelerating RS model yet.

Focus RS – powered by a specially engineered version of Ford’s new 2.3-liter EcoBoost® engine producing projected 350 horsepower and 350 lb.-ft. of torque – will reach a top speed of 165 mph.

For North America, Focus RS pricing will start at $36,605.

The all-new 2016 Focus RS optimizes acceleration by introducing launch control technology to a Ford RS model for the first time. Focus RS also debuts new Ford Performance All-Wheel Drive with Dynamic Torque Vectoring – for outstanding traction and grip with dynamic agility and cornering speed.

“The all-new Focus RS will bring the legendary nameplate to a new generation of global customers for the first time,” said Dave Pericak, director, Ford Performance. “Focus RS delivers stunning performance and innovative technology at a price that will make both enthusiast consumers and premium automakers look twice.”

Focus RS launch control configures the car’s chassis and powertrain systems to deliver the fastest possible acceleration – in various track conditions. The driver selects launch control from the cluster menu, engages first gear, applies full throttle and releases the clutch. The system then delivers optimum drive – including distributing torque through the all-wheel-drive system, maintaining maximum torque using the turbo overboost function, managing traction control and setting the dampers.

To achieve maximum acceleration through the gears, a performance shift light in the instrument cluster alerts the driver when approaching the optimum upshift point of 5,900 rpm, and flashes if the engine hits the 6,800-rpm limit.

Ford Performance All-Wheel Drive uses twin electronically controlled clutch packs to manage the car’s front/rear torque split, and can control side-to-side torque distribution on the rear axle – delivering the torque vectoring capability that produces a dramatic impact on handling and cornering stability.
